From the Salvation Army’s 140 challenge celebrating its 140th anniversary, to Rainforest Trust UK’s Hug 100 Trees challenge, here are five events taking place now and in the near future.

Salvation Army celebrates 140th anniversary

The Salvation Army’s children’s magazine Kids Alive! is set to mark its 140th anniversary on 27 August with children across the country encouraged to take part in its 140 challenge during the summer holidays and raise funds for their local Salvation Army church or centre. The 140 challenge will see the young people get sponsored to take part in 140 different activities.  One of those taking part is Lexi Hutchinson, nine, (pictured) who will be doing 140 star jumps to raise money for her local corps in Bristol.  


Launchpad’s Big Sleep Out at home returns

Launchpad’s Big Sleep Out at home is back for another year, with the charity asking people to brave the outdoors for one night in their garden over the weekend of World Homeless Day (Saturday 9 to Sunday 10 October and raise funds for local people at risk of losing their home because of the pandemic. The Big Sleep Out at home aims to raise a record £60,000. The charity’s flagship event will see participants enjoy a livestreamed programme via Facebook from 6pm, hosted by Patron and TV presenter Matt Allwright and BBC Radio’s Michelle ‘Babs’ Jordan. It will include an interactive cooking challenge, instructions on how to make a crisp packet ground sheet, messages from Launchpad clients and live music.  


Rainforest Trust UK asks people to Hug 100 Trees

Springwatch presenter Michaela Strachan (pictured, and main image) is encouraging people across the UK to hug 100 trees this summer to raise money for rainforest protection. The Hug 100 Trees campaign is organised by conservation charity Rainforest Trust UK, and asks people hug any trees they like – in the local park, a nearby woodland, a beautiful forest, their garden, or in the street. You can hug all your 100 trees on the same day, or spread your tree-hugging throughout the summer – the only rule is that they must be 100 different trees.


Terry Fox Run UK comes to London

The UK Terry Fox Association, the UK affiliate of Canadian cancer research charity The Terry Fox Foundation, will host the Terry Fox Run UK in Central London for the first time in 14 years on 2 October 2021. A traditional event will be held in Battersea Park on the morning of 2 October, while that day participants across the UK can join virtually by running in their communities. All monies raised in the UK will go towards The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Last year, the virtual run raised over £75,000 with almost 900 participants across 60 communities in the UK. 


Breast Cancer Now invites people to join it for Afternoon Tea

Breast Cancer Now is calling on people across the UK to sign up for to this year’s Afternoon Tea. Taking placethroughoutAugustAfternoon Tea is one of the charity’s biggest fundraising events, having raised more than £7 million for people affected by breast cancer since its launch in 1998. Whether it’s a cuppa in the garden or delivering treats to friends, anyone can take part. All money raised will help Breast Cancer Now in its work. This year’s fundraising kit includes decorations and games to make events special, including bespoke digital bunting designed by British brand Cath Kidston who is supporting this year’s event. For the month of August, Cath Kidston will also be donating 10% from the sale of all mugs to Breast Cancer Now.
