Driver turns loss of mother into a life-changing positive for others

Rising NASCAR star Joey Gase is on a mission.

Actually, he’s on two missions. And the most important mission is not the one that he hopes ultimately lands him a full-time Sprint Cup ride.

Gase, 22, lost his mother, Mary Jo, to a brain aneurysm when he was just 18 years old. His mom was not married at the time of her death, and Joey was faced with the decision of whether or not to donate his mother's organs.

“My mom was always a loving, helpful and very caring person, and we knew if she could no longer continue her life, she would want to do whatever she could do to help others continue theirs,” Gase told Autoweek. “We never really talked about it before. When we rushed to the hospital, her driver’s license was left at home. We weren't able to look at that and know for sure what she wanted, but we said yes to the organ donation. Continue reading
