SIOUX FALLS, SD - Ashley Doohen's decision to donate her son Tyrese Ruffin's kidneys and liver was a life-saving gesture for two patients awaiting transplants. Many parents don't ever consider the option of donating organs because they don't expect to lose their child at such a young age.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 122,000 people are waiting for a new organ. Twenty-two of them will die each day during that wait. Less than 10 percent of organ and tissue donations come from people under the age of 18.
LifeSource, the non-profit agency that manages organ donations, says a parent's decision to donate their child's organs can help with the grieving process. Continue reading
