A gift no mother wants to ask for, but one that saved her life

University of Miami Health System physicians at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Miami Transplant Institute have set the bar throughout Florida and the nation for transplant medicine.

Gloria Morrison didn’t know much about the team at the Miami Transplant Institute, a unique affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System. However, Gloria discovered these skilled physicians and their multidisciplinary team would change her life – and her son’s life – forever.

For almost a decade, Gloria struggled with acute kidney disease and hypertension. When her health worsened, doctors placed her on peritoneal dialysis, a treatment that required her to use a catheter during the day and a special machine at night. She would need dialysis for the rest of her life unless she received a kidney transplant. Fortunately, her 18-year-old son, Paul, was a perfect match.

Gloria underwent a successful kidney transplant. Thanks to MTI and her son’s selfless gift, today she’s thriving. Continue reading
