As an orthopedic surgeon at Weirton Medical Center, Stephen Alatis is used to looking at x-rays of his patients' problems.
But not necessarily his sister's.
So when his sister Lisa's health was worsening from Lupus that was attached to her kidneys, he wanted to help. He offered his own organ to stop his sister's suffering.
"When it's your sister, your mom, or your wife or your kids, you've just got all the emotions going on," Stephen said. "Rather than trying to make a decision based on medical knowledge, facts, and things like that, now you're making an emotional decision to go along with it." Continue reading
