News) -- During his career he delivered more than 4000 babies. More than a year after his death, an Austin doctor is still helping people.
“Dick and I were married before he started medical school so I was there the first day of his gross anatomy class when he came out of the lab being a little bit green," Belita Schindler recalled.
He was a doctor, an avid bicyclist, a dedicated volunteer and a champion for his community. And while he couldn’t know it at the time, that gross anatomy class would contribute something else to Dick Schindler's legacy.
"During that year he just felt so grateful those people could give their bodies so he could learn how it all worked," his wife Belita remembered. “So he carried ... my little wrinkly card ... he carried an organ donor card for 50 years."
He was carrying the card in his wallet on October 18th, 2014. At the age of 72, it was the day Dr. Richard "Dick" Schindler died of injuries suffered in a bicycle accident. Continue reading
