The plan to increase organ donation
A report has been released recommending changes to the Organ and Tissue Authority to increase the number of organ donations and transplants.

The Organ and Tissue Authority could come under new management, months after Sunrise co-host David Koch resigned as chairman on live television, with a review criticising his former advisory council as lacking strategic oversight.

The government-commissioned review of organ and tissue donation, released on Tuesday, recommended that seven to nine people be appointed to a new "board of governance", which could throw into doubt the future of the authority's current advisory council.

The $212,000 review, by Ernst & Young, said that the authority was currently run by groups that were "advisory in nature only and do not provide any strategic oversight, performance monitoring, succession planning or mentoring of the CEO".

"Some concerns were raised by a number of stakeholders over the observed 'defensiveness' of the Organ and Tissue Authority and tendency to limit debate about controversial issues; however, a board of governance should foster a culture of debate within the Donate Life Network and the OTA," it said.
