Every 10 minutes, a new patient begins the wait for a lifesaving organ transplant, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Right now, more than 120,000 people are on the list.
And every day, 22 patients die waiting.
Katie Mardigian, transplant outreach coordinator for the Virginia Commonwealth University Hume-Lee Transplant Center, spends her days spreading education about organ transplants.
“Without organ donors, there would be no transplants,” she said.
Over half of the U.S. adult population are registered as organ donors, according to Richmond-based Donate Life Virginia. But, even with 65 percent registered to donate, the supply does not meet the demand, Mardigian pointed out.
“It really is determined by how the donor passes, so the number is much smaller than you would realize,” she said. “We really do need everyone to register so the total number of actual donations can go up.” Continue reading
