Sahin Yasar, 15, urgently needs a heart transplant
The mother of a teenager waiting for a heart transplant has backed the campaign to make organ donation “opt out”.

Catriona Yasar’s son Sahin is in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mater Hospital in Dublin and she said “every minute of every hour of every day we wait for the phone call to say there is a suitable heart”.

She added: “Technically he is the sickest and youngest adult on the heart transplant list in Ireland.”

Although the 15-year-old was diagnosed with four separate heart conditions when he was just five weeks old, Sahin has led a relatively normal life and was looking forward to spending St Patrick’s weekend with his family and friends.

He was not himself last November and for the second time in his life, Catriona insisted there was something wrong before doctors had diagnosed the problem.

She said: “I knew there was something wrong when he was just a few weeks old.

“I took him to the emergency department five times from when he was two-weeks-old. It was even suggested to me I had Munchausen Syndrome. Continue reading
