Kara Yimoyines needs your help.

A lupus sufferer, she is in immediate need of a kidney transplant. She has run through her inner circle of potential donors, and the wait for a cadaver donation can stretch from six to eight years.

Although she is hesitant to ask strangers for help, with her kidney function down to 13 percent and the dialysis she had hoped to avoid now all but inevitable, Yimoyines is now reaching out, hoping to cast a wide net in her search for a live donor kidney.

At issue is her type O blood, which disqualified many in her circle of family and friends. Also, complications from lupus, an autoimmune disease, eliminates 50 percent of potential donors, she said.

“The good news is, once I have the transplant, it will be like not having lupus at all,” she said.

Yimoyines was diagnosed with lupus at age 16, after a series of mysterious fevers raised the attention of her doctor father. Continue reading
