Waves of somber students walked over from Fort Myers High School to Lee Memorial Hospital to honor one of their own.

A knot of girls clutched each other and cried on shoulders. Bunches of bleary-eyed boys patted each other on the back. A mourning mother, brother and father were showered with love.

More than a hundred were there to honor Cameron Mayhew and the fact that the organ donor's death may save eight lives.

The 16-year-old was walking to his waiting school bus at Pine Ridge Road and Bombay Lane in south Fort Myers about 6 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck and killed by a car. Cape Coral's Zackery Treinen, 23, had his citation upgraded from serious bodily injury to reflect Mayhew's death and will have to appear in court. Continue reading
