DALLAS (CBS11) – New technology being tested in North Texas is breathing new hope into many in need of a lung transplant.
This spring, UT Southwestern surgeons became the first in Texas to transplant lungs tested and refurbished with new technology known as ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP).
John Herzig became the first patient in Texas to be transplanted with lungs evaluated with EVLP technology.
The 58-year-old former junior high basketball coach and school superintendent was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis earlier this year. He needed a lung transplant and soon.
“It was really emotional for my family,” Herzig said. “From the time I found out I had it,it was a waiting game as to what comes first – the lungs or my demise.”
Last year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, more than 200 people died while waiting for a lung transplant. Continue reading
