Yesterday, I posted about bad ideas and how to kill them. Today, I want to tell you how to harness the positive power of bad ideas.
That strange saying, There's no such thing as a bad idea is almost completely untrue, except in one situation: idea generation.
When you are brainstorming -- whether in a group or on your own -- it's important to suspend judgement on ideas you generate. Truth is, there are plenty of bad ideas. Most of them are bad. But for the sake of getting stuff out there for consideration, you must let the bad ones survive. At least for a little while.
I like to go even a step further when brainstorming and actually seek bad ideas. Spend a few minutes listing the worst ideas you can think of. This does a few helpful things:
- It clears the air. We're sometimes so afraid of bad ideas that we can't come up with any ideas. Brainstorming often becomes more productive after you've sought some bad ideas.
- Some bad ideas are just a detail or two away from being good ideas. The bad version can be a stepping stone to its good doppelganger.
- Some ideas are so bad they help clarify what bad and good actually are. That is incredibly valuable knowledge!
So let the bad ideas flow.
Just make sure you stop them before they are put into practice!
