Alex Lochrane appointed CEO at The Brain Tumour Charity

The Brain Tumour Charity has appointed Alex Lochrane as its new Chief Executive Officer. Lochrane joins the charity following six and a half years as CEO at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, where, under his leadership, the organisation delivered a clinical transition strategy and significantly increased its income to grow from 700 to 2,000 critical care response missions per year. He has spent the last 15 years in the voluntary sector, leading The Jubilee Sailing Trust and Chiddingstone Castle before joining Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance in 2014. Prior to moving to the charity sector, Lochrane had a successful first career as a Royal Navy Officer, rising to the rank of Commander, including sea-going command and combat operational tours (HMS Monmouth, HMS Somerset and HMS Vanguard), as well as shore-based instructional and overseas appointments.


 DEC announces Hannah Richards as new Director of Communications 

The Disasters Emergency Committee has appointed Hannah Richards as Director of Communications. Richards will lead the DEC’s communications team covering media, PR, content, digital and the DEC’s presence in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. She will also lead on the DEC’s key relationships with national broadcasters, including overseeing the delivery of the appeals and implementing key parts of the DEC’s strategy. Since 2017 Richards has been Head of Communications at CARE International UK, including a stint as Interim Director of Fundraising, Partnerships and Communications. Her other roles include Raleigh International, Christian Aid and Amnesty International. At DEC she takes over from Barney Guiton who served as interim director since August 2021 when Nicola Peckett joined Freedom Fund after almost five years at the DEC. 


The Equality Trust Announces Dr Zubaida Haque as Executive Director

Dr Zubaida Haque has joined the Equality Trust as its Executive Director. Previously, Dr Haque was a voluntary member at the Independent SAGE and Interim Director at Runnymede Trust.  Her senior experience spans education, employment, housing, social security, criminal justice and public health, with a portfolio of contributions to national commissions and working groups including SAGE, on how to address inequalities in the pandemic, creating a gender equal economy and improving diversity in motorsports and STEM subjects as a Commissioner on the [Lewis] Hamilton Commission.

Trio Media CEO joins board of trustees for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund

Yorkshire charity, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) has appointed Claire Daniels, CEO of Trio Media, as its newest trustee. Daniels is the most recent Board Member to join CHSF and will use her expertise to support with strategic digital marketing for the children’s charity. Daniels and the Trio Media team will work alongside the internal marketing team to drive initiatives to increase donations and raise awareness of CHSF and congenital heart disease (CHD). As part of her role as trustee, she will share joint responsibility for governing the charity whilst supporting the Executive to deliver on strategic plans for growth.


Sarah Fowler to join WWT as CEO

The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), has appointed Sarah Fowler as its Chief Executive, joining in March.  Fowler is currently Chief Executive of Peak District National Park Authority and has an extensive background in nature conservation and connecting people to green and blue spaces, as well as leadership and organisational development. In her current role, she has led the development of the National Park Authority’s strategy and has led for the ten English National Parks on their nature recovery work. She has previously worked in the Environment Agency, led the Peterborough Environment City Trust and worked at English Nature. She began her career at the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, leading the Wildlife Trusts Water for Wildlife campaign in Wessex, and has also worked for the RSPB heading up the water policy team.

Fiona Fernie to take over as Clan Cancer Support CEO

Northeast cancer charity, Clan Cancer Support has announced that its CEO Dr Colette Backwell is to step down in Spring this year. Dr Backwell will hand over the reins to Fiona Fernie, current Head of Income Generation & Business Development at Clan, in March. A born and bred Highlander and alumna of the University of Aberdeen, Fernie has a background in commercial development, spending 10 years at Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce developing their training offering and working as the Chamber lead for members in retail, the third sector and culture and creative industries. Her role at the Chamber of Commerce also included involvement in regional projects, including the inaugural Great Aberdeen Run in 2017. She joined Clan as Head of Income Generation & Business Development the same year. Dr Backwell will continue with her non-executive roles at the University of Aberdeen, the Chamber of Commerce and Developing the Young Workforce North-East Scotland. 


Jonathan Levy appointed CIoF Convention Chair

Managing Director of Resolute Fundraising, Jonathan Levy, has been appointed as the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s Convention Chair. Levy has been a Fundraising Convention board member for more than three years, and takes over from Age UK’s Laurie Bold.
