ROCKFORD — Waiting for a kidney transplant is weakening Janice Morris, an African-American woman living in Rockford’s Ellis Heights neighborhood.
She's not sure how long she can survive.
Her daughter may be a match. If her daughter isn’t, then maybe her sons. Her wait has lasted a year now, and moments with her 10 grandchildren have become ever more precious.
If a relative’s kidney isn't a suitable match, she'll look to a non-family donor. Her best chance of a suitable organ is one donated by an African-American, but her odds of finding one would be better if more African-Americans registered to donate.
