The Bank of England has announced that the next £20 note will feature an image of artist JMW Turner.
The reverse of the note will depict a self-portrait of the artist and The Fighting Temeraire, one of his most famous paintings.
Turner was selected following public nominations for visual artists, the first time that the Bank of England has invited public suggestions for the £20 note’s design. The Banknote Character Advisory Committee received 29,701 nominations proposing a total of 590 eligible characters.
Suggestions included William Morris, Derek Jarman, Vanessa Bell, Alfred Hitchcock, Barbara Hepworth, and Charlie Chaplin.
The Committee, with help from public focus groups, then produced a shortlist and Mark Carney, the Governor, made the final decision in favour of JMW Turner.
He joined artist Tracey Emin to announce the selected artist at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, built on the site of the house in which Turner stayed when he visited the seaside town.
The Turner £20 note will be in circulation by 2020.
