Alastair Stark, of Consecon, smiles while standing outside Belleville General Hospital Thursday. He received a transplant of part of his son's liver and 14 years later is in good health - and hoping to inspire more people to register as donors.
As father and son, Alistair and Stuart Stark share many things – including Stuart’s liver.
In 2001, Alistair had just retired from 30 years as a Toronto police officer when he went for his “10,000-mile checkup.”
The Consecon resident, who’s now 66, said a blood test caused his doctor to do further tests. The married father of two soon learned he had non-alcoholic cirrhosis of his liver.
“I felt great at the time but I started to deteriorate,” he said.
Stark said he lost 60 lbs and became tired and jaundiced.
He needed a liver transplant. After almost two years of waiting, he said, “I was on my deathbed, waiting for a cadaver liver that wasn’t coming.” Continue reading
