A bid to bring the World Transplant Games to the North East is gathering momentum.
Having hosted the most successful British Transplant Games ever last year, Newcastle and Gateshead is currently bidding to host the World Games in the summer of 2019.
Now, some of the key figures transplant sporting world have visited Newcastle ahead of a decision being made in July.
Newcastle and Gateshead has been shortlisted alongside Houston in Texas and it’s hoped this week’s visit will go towards securing the event for the region.
Visitors to the Freeman Hospital’s Institute of Transplantation from the World Transplant Games Federation included Australia president Chris Thomas.
David Nix, chairman of the Donor Family Network, said: “As Newcastle and Gateshead bids to bring the World Transplant Games here, the visit from the federation has provided a great opportunity to both profile the pioneering work underway here and to formally thank some of the organisations and individuals playing an important role in keeping organ donation front of mind.
