One local couple recently received a call that would touch their hearts and change their lives forever.

Bill Flango, 51, of Morganton, and his wife Nancy, received a call on Nov. 19 that left Bill with the quick decision of whether to undergo heart transplant surgery that very evening.


Bill is a former financial analyst and financial trainer who worked for Bloomberg for more than 25 years, primarily in Princeton, New Jersey, and also in places such as New York City, Tokyo, London and Los Angeles. Before having heart complications, he was physically active in softball, volleyball, tennis, snow skiing, touch football, hiking, kickboxing and biking.

The couple started coming to Lake James in 2004 and, in 2010, they completed building a home there designated for a getaway spot and a retirement home later in life. But, with news from doctors at Johns Hopkins in 2013 that Bill should consider a heart transplant and his inability to physically do his job anymore, the couple left their New Jersey home and moved to Lake James in 2014.
