The past year saw a 98% payment rate of the Fundraising Regulator’s voluntary Fundraising Levy – the highest rate to date – according to its Annual Report and Accounts, published today.

The reporting period, which covers 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021, saw 1,974 eligible fundraising organisations contribute a total of £2.17 million to the levy, which funds the regulator.

The past year

Over the year, the Fundraising Regulator also reported a 26% increase in smaller charity registrations. A total of 4,975 fundraising organisations were registered with the regulator and committed to best fundraising practice at its year-end.

The Fundraising Regulator’s Annual Report also reflects on its continued response to the pandemic over the past year, which saw it publish guidance on in-person fundraising, as well as its Annual Complaints Report, which found that online fundraising was the most complained about fundraising method while in-person methods were largely paused.

The regulator also focused last year on raising public awareness of its Fundraising Badge. When an organisation registers with it, they can use the badge to show potential donors that they have committed to excellent fundraising practice. According to the regulator, over the year, use of the badge on charity fundraising campaigns has become more widespread.

The year ahead

In the year ahead, the Fundraising Regulator will be developing its priorities for the next five years. It will be engaging with the sector in the coming months on its new strategic plan, which will set out its aims until 2027.

The Fundraising Regulator will be presenting its highlights of the year and its future plans at its annual event on 1 March, which is online and open to all.
