PEORIA, Ariz. - Forget brunch, chocolates, or flowers. On this Mother’s Day, a Peoria mom is celebrating the ultimate gift she received from her son: a kidney.

Kim Laurey was told her kidneys were failing when she was diagnosed with advanced-stage kidney disease. She was told the waitlist for a kidney was up to five years and the best solution was to look for a living donor.

Laurey resigned herself to thinking it would be a long wait, but behind the scenes her 19-year-old son was preparing a big surprise.

As soon as he learned about his mother’s diagnosis, Ryan Laurey overcame his fear and decided to get tested to see if he could be a donor. When the tests came back positive, he said his heart was pounding and he was nervous, but also very excited. Continue reading
