Halp! The new tax law is going to kill us!

Probably not.

But don't ignore it. Here are some great thoughts from Clairification, at New Tax Law: How Worried Should Your Nonprofit Be?

  • Rich Donors Will Have More After-Tax Dollars to Spend (this also applies to businesses, possibly opening new opportunities in corporate giving)
  • Those Who Itemize Can Now Deduct More
  • Pay Extra Attention to Mid-Level Donors (these donors -- people who used to itemize, but won't any more, are the group most likely to give less)
  • Understand and Tap Into Why Donors Give (the tax motivation has never been the main reason donors give)

The main reason not to worry too much is, as Clair points out:

... most passionate philanthropy stems from deeply held values. People who make major gifts, and who give to you repeatedly, do so regardless of the economy. They stick with you through thick and thin. Because... they believe.

Fundraising is about putting donors' values into action. If you do that for them, the tax laws will make little difference for your results.
