Gordon and Gloria Breithaupt celebrated a unique anniversary earlier this week.

It wasn’t their wedding anniversary. That’s coming in November.

But this was an anniversary that depicts the life-giving love and commitment between a husband and wife.

Sept. 21 marked the 10th anniversary of the day when Gloria donated a kidney to her husband at the University of Nebraska Lied Transplant Center in Omaha.

Gloria said she was happy to donate a kidney to the man she married in 1973.

The two met at Fremont High School in 1969.

"We were in the same study hall," she recalled. "He said he noticed my long, blonde hair and I joked that he just thought I had a nice kidney."

At the time, she was also the band librarian.

"We had a new band director who wanted every sheet of music in the band library stamped, ‘Fremont Varsity Band,’ and as the librarian I had to see that was done," she said. Continue reading
