Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at a blood drive in Friday Harbor 88 whole blood donors and five platelet donors registered to donate blood. They included five first-time whole blood donors and six donors who reached milestone gallon markers.
As a result of the drive 76 units of whole blood and four units of platelets were collected. Since a unit of whole blood is separated into the different components (red blood cells, platelets, and plasma), the donations bring health and comfort to 228 patients.
Organizers say the blood donations collected at the blood drive are critical to maintain a stable blood supply for surgeries, medical emergencies, and for supporting patients battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and other cancers.
Organizers say, "Thanks to all the donors who took time out of their busy day to donate blood. With great appreciation to San Juan Island Lions Club for blood drive sponsorship; Curt VanHyning for organizing the drive and San Juan Island Lions Club members for their assistance; the Mullis Community Center for providing the blood drive site, and the volunteers who helped on the day of the drive. We couldn’t have done it without you. On behalf of patients in our community’s hospitals, I wish to extend our thanks to you." Continue reading about the patients who were helped by blood donation.
