Mike and Jess with daughter Billie and son Noah have been nominated for a Pride of Britain Award

As presenter Carol Vorderman takes to the stage for this week’s glittering Pride of Britain Awards ceremony, one couple in particular will be reliving the moments that led to them being nominated for a Special Recognition Award.

In among the emotionally charged atmosphere, Jess Evans and her partner Mike Houlston will be flooded with bittersweet memories of their little boy, Teddy , who lived for little more than an hour, but who has since had a huge impact on the lives of others and saved one man’s life…

Now, his memory lives on, and Jess, Mike and their two children Billie, four, and Noah, one, are in no doubt that Teddy both lived, and died, a hero.

When Jess, 29, was just 12 weeks pregnant with twin boys, the couple were given the devastating news that one of them was fatally ill with anencephaly – a rare birth defect that prevents the brain and skull developing.

Despite being told their baby may only survive a day or two, they made the decision to carry on with the pregnancy, wanting even just a few precious minutes with their son.

Mike, 30, says, "From the start, we were both 100% against an abortion. It was never about that for us, it was more about how we coped with it and to see how we could try and make everything as pain-free as possible. Continue reading
