Fundraising events that challenge participants physically as well as mentally with the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary can be hugely successful. Vertical fundraising events are particularly popular.
Here are five of the vertical fundraising events taking place this year:
1) Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity Road to Twickenham Challenge
HMS Temeraire is challenging Royal Navy sailors, staff and trainees to conduct thousands of ascents of a new purpose-built indoor climbing wall to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
Part of the RNRMC’s annual Road to Twickenham fundraising campaign, it challenges participants to traverse the equivalent distance from their workplace, ship, unit or local sports club to Twickenham before kick off time for the Army v Navy rugby fixture on April 30th. The fourth time the event has taken place, so far it has raised over £20,000.
2) Caudwell Children Snowdon Climb
Caudwell Children is challenging people to climb Snowdon to raise funds for the charity. The 1,085m ascent will take place on Saturday 16th April. Participants can register to climb as individuals or as a team. Entry is £21 and climbers are asked to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship for the charity. Money generated by the climb will help Caudwell Children to provide therapies, treatments, specialist equipment and short breaks to disabled children across the UK.
3) Mencap Step Up
Mencap is challenging people to run up 36 floors on 17th July in its Step Up fundraiser to help it to fight high rates of unemployment for people with a learning disability. Taking place at London’s ‘Walkie Talkie’ the dash up 828 steps will take participants to the up to the SkyGarden – Europe’s highest roof garden. The fundraising target is £200 per individual, and £900 for a team of five.

4) Shelter Vertical Rush
Shelter is asking over 1000 people to race up the 932 steps of London’s Tower 42 on 8th March to help raise over £365,000 for the charity. Individuals are asked to raise at least £160, while teams of five have an £800 target.
5) GOSH BT Tower Climb
Normally off-limits to the public, this event on 5th March provides a chance to climb the BT Tower, rising 191 metres above the ground, up 34 floors and over 1,000 steps, All climbers are asked to commit to fundraise a minimum of £250 to help the patients and families of Great Ormond Street Hospital. Funds will support the hospital’s redevelopment programme.
