PRESCOTT – Former Yavapai College soccer player Darragh Boyle, 19, spent part of this past spring semester manning a Donate Life Arizona booth at the school’s cafeteria for a community service project.
Boyle of Litchfield Park, who will be a sophomore this fall, said Donate Life ambassador for Yavapai County Tom Gammill inspired him to erect the booth, which encouraged fellow students and others on campus to consider becoming organ donors.
“It was a good opportunity to give back to the community,” said Boyle, a reserve freshman forward for Yavapai in 2015 who is transferring to Benedictine University at Mesa this fall. “Listening to people’s life stories, understanding other people’s struggles [was an eye-opener].”
Gammill of Prescott – who received a heart transplant 24 years ago and is the second-oldest heart-transplant survivor out of more than 400 recipients since the early 1990s at Sharp Hospital in San Diego – is better known as Mr. Roughrider, Yavapai College’s mascot.
He speaks about the importance of organ donation at several different locations throughout the year, such as Prescott Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital, high schools, service clubs and men’s church groups. Continue reading
