They say that beauty is only skin deep, so Donate Life Pennsylvania is asking Pennsylvania residents to post their ugly photos of themselves on Facebook and Twitter using #uglytruth to reveal the beauty of being an organ donor for the Ugly Truth Campaign.

Donate Life Pennsylvania is challenging people to either post an ugly photo of themselves, register at donatelifepa. org, or do both.

After they register or post a photo, the organization wants participants to tag as many of their friends as possible so that they word is spread.

Dwendy Johnson, who works at the Gift of Life program’s community outreach program, said that it is important to raise awareness about the issue online because only 46 percent of licensed drivers were registered organ and tissue donors in 2013.

It’s “less than 50 percent of the community,” she said. “It is an ugly truth out there that more lives could be saved if someone was an organ donor. Every 18 hours, someone in Pennsylvania dies waiting for an organ.”

However, Johnson hopes that this campaign will help turn those numbers around because of social media’s prominence in people’s lives. Continue reading
