HANCOCK COUNTY -The memory of a college student killed last summer by a drunk driver is living on through some life-saving gifts, and bringing hope out of tragedy.
Wind chimes clang outside Carla McCloud's family home. Inside, her mother sits at a kitchen table filled with keepsakes and pictures of the smiling daughter she encouraged to "shine."
"She was very, very shy. She had so much to offer, she needed to shine," said Cindy McCloud.
But just when 22-year-old Carla was at her brightest, her light was snuffed out by a drunk driver.
A painted white bike filled with flowers and stuffed animals are part of a front lawn memorial for Carla. The "ghost bike," as it's called, serves as a quiet reminder of what happened August 11, 2015.
A car plowed into the back of Carla and her cousin Amanda Wheeler as they rode bikes along County Road 300 South between Greenfield and New Palestine. Wheeler is still healing from the accident.
Seventeen-year-old Timothy Hughes, the driver, was three times the legal limit drunk. He is now serving a nine-year prison sentence for reckless homicide.
Carla was declared brain dead, but in her pending death, Eyewitness News has now learned she gave light and hope to 70 people through organ donation. Continue reading, VIDEO
