Andrew Crowley had a strange, yet familiar feeling in the hours and days after receiving a double lung transplant at Toronto General Hospital on June 5 of last year.
“I felt like I was 13 again,” said the 29-year-old from Stratford. “It was remarkable.”
Even more remarkable is that Crowley was able to return to Toronto earlier this month--little more than a year after his surgery--and compete in the Canadian Transplant Games where he collected four medals, including three gold.
Participating in the 18 to 29 age category, he won gold in golf, 10-pin bowling and doubles lawn bowling, and added a bronze in triples lawn bowling, which had no age restrictions.
“It was my first 18-hole round in three years and I was able to walk the whole course,” he said proudly. “It wasn't about winning medals, it was just the fact that I was able to play and enjoy myself.
“I heard this at the Games, and it's true: 'We won the day we got our transplants.' Everything else is just a bonus.” Continue reading
