STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- It was looking grim for George Mattera.
His kidneys began to fail about five years ago and just before the holidays he learned the next step was dialysis.
Family members and friends stepped forward and offered to donate a kidney — but after much testing, none were compatible.
After posting a desperate plea through his Facebook page to see if any of his friends would be interested in becoming a donor, Darren Corona, a friend of George's who had known him through running events on Staten Island, spotted the post and found out he was a match.
The procedure was a success, but after reporting the heartwarming story, we learned that New York state is in serious trouble when it comes to registered organ donors. Continue reading
