Looking gaunt but feeling “great,” Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk says he needs to add muscle to what has become a pretty lean frame, but otherwise, expects to make a full recovery from the stunning liver transplant he underwent almost four months ago.
Melnyk spoke briefly to the Citizen Wednesday on a chance encounter at the Holland Cross complex on Scott Street and Holland Avenue, where he had arrived by car with aide Hussein Mahmoud to see his dentist. The two men had just entered the elevator in the underground parking garage.
His recovery is going very well, said Melnyk, although he acknowledged he has lost considerable weight and “I have to put on some muscle” as he pinched his right upper arm to show how thin it had become.
Melnyk, 56, said he is planning to hold a press conference on Oct. 11 — when the Senators play their home opener against the Montreal Canadiens — to talk about his surgery. His illness prompted a public search for a live donor after doctors determined he had life-threatening liver disease. He then said he had to go because he had “to see my dentist.” Continue reading
