Penticton is one of 25 communities across B.C. that will champion the cause of kidney transplantation and organ donation with a Kidney Walk.

The event will take place Sunday at Gyro Park, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m.

“We are especially thrilled to dedicate the 2015 walk to our very own local hero: Teresa Atkinson, who after a 17 year wait, is the recipient of the miracle of kidney donation. Teresa is doing great and is recovering from her surgery at the kidney suites in Vancouver. Funds from events such as this off-set the costs of staying in the suites. We look forward to Teresa coming home to Penticton very soon," said Barb Sheppard, the walk coordinator.

Over 500 people in B.C. are currently on the wait list for a life-saving organ transplant, and almost 400 of those are waiting for a kidney. Thousands more are on dialysis and may also need a transplant. Many of these patients will die waiting.

That’s why the walk is focusing its efforts on the importance of kidney transplantation and organ donation, and why thousands of participants will walk in support of kidney patients and their families. Continue reading
