UPMC will resume transplant operations at UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Montefiore effective immediately, the hospital system released in a statement on Sunday.
The tranplant centers at the two sites had voluntarily suspended activities since last Monday over concerns about mold.
Four patients are thought to have picked up fungal infections over the past year in transplant units at Presby and Montefiore, and three of them died. It isn’t clear whether the infections contributed to the fatalities.
"This decision was made based upon our extensive internal and external review of procedures and treatments," said Steven D. Shapiro, UPMC's chief medical and scientific officer, in a statement. "All parties, including UPMC, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at the invitation of the state DOH, have determined it prudent to lift our voluntary suspension of the organ transplant program at UPMC Presbyterian effective immediately.
The hospital said it will begin interviewing candidates tomorrow. The adult waiting lists at UPMC hospitals currently include about 1,300 transplant recipient candidates. Continue reading
