Most Pennsylvanians who are not registered as an organ donor would be willing to accept an organ donation if they needed it, according to a recent survey by Donate Life Pennsylvania.

About 400 non-organ donors were surveyed statewide -- including those from Beaver County -- and 82 percent said they would accept a transplant if they were sick or injured.

“We know from past polls that over 90 percent of Pennsylvanians say they support organ and tissue donation, but the latest numbers show that only 46 percent of Pennsylvanians are registered. Those numbers don’t add up, and we wanted to understand why,” Susan Stuart, president and CEO of the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) in Pittsburgh, said in a prepared statement.

The survey also asked respondents about why they did not want to be an organ donor, where many common misconceptions emerged. Continue reading
