Logan died after a Montgomery swimming accident, but his heart now beats in the heart of an 8-year-old Alabama girl.(Photo: Contributed photo) A San Jose, California, mother whose 7-year-old son died in August 2015 after a swimming accident in her grandfather’s Montgomery pool, donated his organs to people needing a transplant as a way to make something positive out of tragedy.
The day of the accident Susan Fortson’s large extended family had gathered to celebrate the 90th birthday of Fortson’s grandfather, Dr. Cecil Prescott, a retired Montgomery psychiatrist.
In a whirlwind pre-Thanksgiving trip back to Alabama this year, Susan Fortson, her husband, Aaron Gardner, and baby daughter Mary Gardner came to visit family and meet transplant recipients for the first time. Fortson, the daughter of Alan and Cecilia Fortson, grew up in Montgomery and graduated from Saint James School and Auburn University Montgomery before moving to Silicon Valley for work.
She wanted to visit family here and meet two of the people who received healthy organs from her son, Logan Martinez. Fortson’s mother was with them at the meetings. Continue reading
