Pekin girls basketball team honored by Iowa Donor Network |
PEKIN — What started out as a simple 4-H project for Maci Gambell has turned into a project that has earned the Pekin girls basketball team statewide praise on Monday. Gambell's project on organ donation led to a night filled with generosity from the school district and surrounding communities as the Panthers raised $7,255 for the Iowa Donor Network through their Donate Life Night.
On Monday, the Iowa Donor Network presented the Panthers with the check for the money they raised. The funds will help benefit Iowa’s sole organ procurement organization, which facilitates both organ and tissue recovery and serves as the state’s primary contact for organ, tissue and eye donation.
"It all started off as a communication project for 4-H, but I knew as a team we had our Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge project that we needed to do," Gambell said. "We made the decision to use organ donation awareness as our community service project. We came up with several different ideas to raise awareness from the Donate Life Night to radio interviews to the Facebook page we started. Continue reading
