A Fort Wayne apartment fire in 2009 rendered Jennifer Spurgeon brain dead; Her organ donations saved the lives of three people.
For the past five years, Rhonda Berger of Winamac has advocated for organ donation because it’s the legacy that keeps the memory of her daughter, Jennifer Spurgeon, alive.
Spurgeon, who Berger describes as “that girl who always laughed and giggled,” died in 2009 at the age of 19. Injuries suffered during an apartment fire in Fort Wayne rendered her brain dead.
“Jennifer, herself, was the one who wanted to be an organ donor,” said Berger, who works as a registered nurse for Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital Home Care, which has offices in Lafayette. "She did that when she was 16 years old." Continue reading.
