SALTVILLE, VA - Like many families Thursday night, four generations of a Southwest Virginia family are spending Christmas Eve together. Unlike many families, three of its members wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the generosity of organ donors.
Since 2008, a couple and their daughter each had a full liver transplant after side effects from Hepatitis C. Without it, they say they wouldn't have survived this long.
It started in 2007 when Dolores Mitchell of Saltville was told she might not make it without a new liver.
"Scary...just knowing I hadn't lived my full life yet," she said.
For months, the family held their breath hoping for a donor.
"We waited for about six months and every time UVA would call you would think that was gonna be the call," her daughter, Laura Hanshaw said. Continue reading
