Jakub Steczikiewicz, pictured with his parents Artur and Edyta, is at home for his first Christmas in four years after doctors made the unprecedented decision to allow him a second transplant of five major organs

Six-year-old Jakub Steczikiewicz had only one Christmas wish: ‘Mummy, I just want to be alive,’ he told his mother Edyta this time last year as she sat beside his hospital bed, in intensive care.

Stricken with cancer, Jakub’s small body was also rejecting the five organs he’d had transplanted in a major operation three months before.

But a year on, he is fighting back after doctors made the unprecedented decision to allow him a second transplant, making him the first child in the UK to have five major organs transplanted – twice.

It means he has just spent his first Christmas at home in four years. Overjoyed Edyta says: ‘Having him at home with us for Christmas is a dream come true.’ Continue reading
