Brewster soccer star inspired a community, and advocated for organ donation

Jessi-Ann Bettcher visited schools and appeared on billboards to advocate for organ donation. At 17, as her own diseased, enlarged heart choked away her life, she received a heart transplant. The young woman took not an ounce of her renewed life, and replaced heart, for granted. She went on to finish Westchester Community College, coach soccer and launch a career, recently joining the Putnam County Youth Bureau.

On Nov. 3, at age 27, Bettcher died. She leaves a legacy — of love, of advocacy, of facing life's challenges head on.

Bettcher, in an interview several years ago with lohud, recalled how gratifying it was to appear on billboards and bus ads for the New York Organ Donor Network, and how rewarding it was to hear from people who saw her ads and considered enrolling as organ and tissue donors.
