Flashing his trademark brilliant smile, the portrait of Army Sgt. Leevon Ritter, 24, smiled back at his mother, Barb Ritter.

But this image of her son was extraordinary: a floragraph created from spices, seeds and crushed flowers. His image will join 60 portraits on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float, “Teammates in Life,” at the 2017 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 2.

Ritter, a Fort Hood soldier, was killed following a motorcycle crash in May 2012. But as he did throughout his life, he has continued to give back to others through the gift of organ donation.

At a Killeen ceremony Friday, Ritter’s portrait was unveiled. Barb Ritter, of LeClaire, Iowa, was overwhelmed with emotion at seeing her son’s portrait and thankful for the opportunity to include it on the float.

“For Leevon to be honored this way is amazing,” Ritter said, tearfully. Southwest Transplant Alliance is sponsoring Ritter’s portrait on the float. Continue reading
