After an emergency procedure at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Puerstl’s heart, liver and kidney were all rushed off to people in need. His heart was flown out to a team from Quebec, his liver went with another team in Toronto.
One of Puerstl’s kidneys remained in Ottawa, but his other kidney was damaged in the crash. Doctors have told the family they are working to salvage it in order to help a fourth person on Ontario’s organ donation list.
The news that Puerstl could still do some good even after death is a small ray of sunshine for the family of the 36-year-old, who are still trying to come to grips with their loss.
“This is something Chris wanted,” said his father Willie Puerstl, adding that the family does not know which family received the organs. “There were three teams that showed up to the hospital and two planes. He (Chris) was unbelievable and healthy.” Continue reading
