LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Sixty-nine-year-old Louella Aker is the first female hand transplant recipient in Kentucky and the 10th patient to receive the procedure in Louisville.
Aker, of Jeffersonville, Ind., had the 17-hour surgery on Oct.17.
She lost her hands back in 2012.
Aker got an infection during cleanup efforts after a tornado swept through Henryville, Ind. It destroyed much of the town.
She was later diagnosed with Septicemia and had to have her legs amputated below the knees, her forearm amputated, and part of her right hand amputated.
Aker was added to the organ donor registry on Sept. 18, 2015. On Oct.17 her wish was answered.
Twenty surgeons from Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center, the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand & Microsurgery and University of Louisville performed the procedure.
Fourteen staff members from Jewish Hospital and six anesthesiologists also assisted with the surgery. Continue reading
