EDWARDSVILLE — After suffering mortal head trauma in a car crash early Sunday, Casey Michalek remained on life support for more than two days.
He had lives to save.
An organ donor with a rare blood type of AB positive, Michalek, 21, was kept alive while operations were scheduled around the country for people on transplant lists waiting for vital body parts, his mother, Christa, said Wednesday.
“His blood type is so rare that the people who he saved thought their lives were over,” Christa Michalek said, noting her son’s heart went to someone in New York. “This miracle came upon them because of my son.”
The Kingston man was pronounced dead Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township, where he was taken after the wreck that occurred in the early morning hours Sunday. Continue reading
