A liver transplant patient at UW Hospital is the first in the country to receive a liver preserved at body temperature instead of in a cold solution, in a study comparing the two methods.
For decades, surgeons around the country have kept donor organs healthy while transporting them to recipients by storing them in a cold solution, called “UW Solution” because it was developed at UW-Madison.
In recent years, doctors have studied an alternative called warm perfusion — pumping organs with blood and nutrition at or just below body temperature. The technique can keep hearts beating and lungs “breathing” while allowing doctors to assess and treat organs to make them last longer, studies suggest.
UW Hospital has joined 14 transplant centers in the U.S. in a study comparing warm, or normothermic, perfusion and cold storage of livers used in transplants. Continue reading
