Finding an organ donor on such short notice can be incredibly tough. Twenty-two people die every day in the U.S. waiting for a transplant, and someone else is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes. Initially, the odds weren't looking good for Krueger. Fortunately, a complete stranger overheard her story and decided he'd do whatever it took to help her.
Chris Dempsey, a former Marine, was at work in Frankfort, Illinois, when he heard a coworker discussing Krueger's case in the office break room. That coworker was Krueger's cousin, who explained that Krueger would likely pass away if she didn't find a liver donor soon. Upon hearing the story, Dempsey immediately volunteered to undergo tests to find out if he could be a donor match.
It didn't phase Dempsey that he was offering this amazing gift to someone he'd never met. "I spent four years in the Marine Corps and learned there never to run away from anything," he sharedwith CBS. "So I just said to myself, ’Hey, if I can help, I’m going to help.'" When medical tests revealed that he was, in fact, a donor match, he gave Krueger a call.
