HOUSTON - Marilyn Burnom is an employee of the Texas Department of Public Safety, an organization that plays an essential role in donor registration, but it never seemed so important until her daughter's life depended on it.

"She had just graduated from college, we were celebrating Father's Day, eating spaghetti dinner at the house, when we knew something was going on," Marilyn Burnom said.

Monica Burnom was diagnosed with lupus and battled the disease for years. It took a toll on her kidneys. Then she was on dialysis for five years, until she got the call that her kidney donation was ready.

"That match was a 21-year-old young man who had died in a car accident," Monica Burnom said. "His donation led to me having a new life." Continue reading
