The number of kidneys donated in Minnesota is trending towards the lowest level in nearly two decades; those hoping for a transplant will wait an average of more than five years to find a donor match.
Many people die while waiting.
The director of the University of Minnesota’s Kidney Transplant Program, billed as the world’s leader in living kidney donations, blames the troubling trend on misconceptions and the economic recession.
“Many potential kidney donors are worried about the financial consequences of donating,” Dr. Hassan Ibrahim said.
He says some people may not be able, or willing, to take six weeks off work to recover from the surgery.
“Kidney donors will suffer financially from donation,” Ibrahim said, adding the donation process should be made cost neutral, so donors do not have to pay travel expenses out of pocket. Continue reading
