AMHERST — Bill Chu proudly says he just turned 10 and plays both the trumpet and the violin. He prefers the violin.

The Wildwood fourth-grader also likes to play basketball and video games. He likes math. But the boy also has end-stage renal disease, and is waiting for a new kidney.

His father, Tu Chu — an employee in auxiliary services at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who himself is battling leukemia — said he worries.

"A lot of worry, responsibility," he said during a recent interview, adding that the family is looking for a kidney donor for his son, and hopes one might be found soon.

In the meantime, Bill is going to Boston three days a week for dialysis. His family needs help to pay for rides, medical expenses not covered by insurance and other costs. Continue reading
